Here's our pick of gluten-free pastas made from healthy ingredients and no artificial additives.

Peas & Qs

Clearspring

Organic Green Pea & Quinoa Pasta, £2.99 (250 g)

www.naturalgrocery.co.uk; tel: 01242 572 323

This protein-rich fusilli is made from 85 per cent green split pea flour and 15 per cent quinoa flour, both organically grown. It's quick to cook (ready in six minutes), tasty (with a strong pea flavour) and counts as one of your five-a-day. Clearspring also does two varieties of brown rice pasta—one with red lentils, and one with quinoa and amaranth.

Bean on my mind

Really Healthy Pasta

Black Bean Penne, £2.99 (250 g)

www.goodhealthnaturally.com; tel: 03337 777 333

This black bean pasta is one of five varieties offered by Really Healthy Pasta, all of which are gluten-free, organic, low on the GI (glycaemic index) and available as penne or fusilli. Made with just black bean flour and a little water, this pasta really lives up to the brand name. It tastes good too, and cooks in only five minutes.

Seeds of change

Sainsbury's

Buckwheat Penne, £2.15 (500 g)

www.sainsburys.co.uk; tel: 0800 328 1700

You may be able to find this pasta at your local Sainsbury's—a major bonus if you prefer to shop in store rather than online. It's made from 100 per cent buckwheat flour, which sounds like a grain, but is actually a gluten-free fruit seed, and has a pleasing taste and texture.

Green sheet

Explore Cuisine

Organic Green Lentil Lasagne, £3.29 (250 g)

www.natureshealthbox.co.uk; tel: 01273 607 942

Low-GI and rich in protein and fibre, these lasagne sheets are a blend of organic green lentils, organic green pea flour and organic brown rice flour. The taste is very similar to regular wheat-based lasagne sheets, and there's no need to pre-boil the pasta before layering it with your chosen ingredients and popping it in the oven.

Just rice

Doves Farm

Brown Rice Spaghetti, £2.49 (500 g)

www.dovesfarm.co.uk; tel: 01488 684 880

UK company Doves Farm has a wide range of organic, gluten-free pasta, mostly made from rice flour. This award-winning spaghetti is one of the wholegrain options, made with just organic brown rice flour and a little water. With such a lovely taste and texture, it's easy to forget that it's gluten-free.
